KI (potassium iodide) is a salt of stable (not radioactive) iodine that can help block radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid gland, thus protecting this gland from radiation injury.

Potassium iodide is a chemical compound, medication, and dietary supplement. As a medication it is used to treat hyperthyroidism, in radiation emergencies, and to protect the thyroid gland when certain types of radiopharmaceuticals are used.In the developing world it is also used to treat skin sporotrichosis and phycomycosis. As a supplement it is used in those who have low intake of iodine in the diet. It is given by mouth.

Used as a feed additive. As a component of thyroxine, iodine participates in the metabolism of all substances in livestock and maintains the heat balance in the body. Iodine is an essential hormone for the growth, reproduction and lactation of livestock and poultry. It can improve the growth performance of livestock and poultry and promote the health of the body. If the body of the livestock is deficient in iodine, it will lead to metabolic disorders, disorders of the body, thyroid enlargement, affecting nerve function and the coloration of the coat and the digestion and absorption of the feed, eventually leading to slow growth.
