Characteristics and Application of Bronopol's Antibacterial and Antiseptic Effects Characteristics and Application of Bronopol

Basic knowledge about Bronopol application

Bronopol's chemical name: 2-bromo-2-nitro-1, 3-propanediol.

White to light yellow, odorless solid, easily soluble in polar solvents such as water, ethanol, and propylene glycol, but Bronopol is hardly soluble in non-polar solvents such as chloroform, acetone, and benzene.

Bronopol has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect. It has good antibacterial and bactericidal effects on Gram-positive, negative bacteria, fungi, and actinobacterium, and also has a good inhibitory effect on pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Bronopol not only has a broad spectrum of antibacterial properties but also has high efficiency, which can inhibit the growth of most bacteria at a concentration of 25×10-8, which determines its low dosage and low cost. It also has the following characteristics:

(1) Good compatibility: all kinds of cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants do not affect the antibacterial effect of Bronopol.

(2) Wide range of pH value application: Bropol is effective in the range of pH 4-9, that is, Bropol has a strong bactericidal effect under acidic, neutral, and weakly alkaline conditions F-.These characteristics of Bropol expand its fields of application.

New fields of Bronopol application

1. Water treatment fungicide

1.1 Water treatment fungicides in the manufacture of industrial cooling water, pulp, and paper

Bronopol can be compounded to form a new class of fungicides. The addition of Bronopol improves the bactericidal effect of these bactericides so that the formulated bactericide can completely prevent the formation of Klebsiella pneumonia. Experimental results show that this new type of fungicide has a good effect on inhibiting the generation of sludge in the manufacture of industrial cooling water, pulp, and paper.

1.2 Bactericide to inhibit sludge expansion.

1.3 Air conditioning circulating water fungicide

2. Fungicide for the petroleum industry

Bronopol and surfactants are made into a strip and block solid bactericides, which are used to control the growth of microorganisms in oil well water. The results show that this bactericide can be dispersed and dissolved in water without dissolving in oil. Therefore, the bactericide can enter the bottom water layer of the oil or gas well collection system to kill bacteria, thereby effectively inhibiting the corrosion of metal workpieces.

3. Pharmaceutical industry

Due to its low toxicity to animals and broad-spectrum bactericidal properties, Bropol has also been used by many pharmaceutical raw materials suppliers in recent years. A new type of hand cleaning agent was invented by using bronopol as a bactericide. Its advantages are that the cleaning needle is easy to use, does not need rinsing after use, and has no irritation and dryness to the skin. The application scope of the pharmaceutical industry will gradually expand.

4. Detergents

This deodorizer can not only kill the fungi and scale insects in the toilet at very low concentration but also effectively remove ammonia, hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan in the air and water of the toilet. Because bronopol is tasteless and cheap, it can be used not only in domestic toilets but also in air deodorant in garbage disposal cans and deodorizing beads in pet bedding. Miyakoshi reported that deodorizers composed of bronopol as bactericide and deodorizer, metal sulfate or metal chloride as filler, and pyrrole compound as an anti-corrosive agent. It can be used for washing and deodorizing feces of trains, buses, airplanes, and ships.

5. Others

In addition to the extensive application in the above five aspects, bronopol has applications in the following aspects: water-based ink preservatives, bactericides for preventing dampproof by water and grass, preservatives for cut flowers, softener components of textiles, preservatives for leather, preservatives for lubricating and cooling liquids, preservatives for vegetable preservatives, bactericidal foam polychlorinated ester raw materials, and so on.
